Owerri Day 2011
Scholarship Recipients
The Owerri day is a special activity organized by the Owerri Cultural Association of Northern California. The event features
activities including traditional dances, scholarship awards, fashion shows, Raffle draws, Owerri Children’s dance and
donations to the less privileged.
For three consecutive years, OCA gave money, food and materials to the Owerri Motherless Babies Home (an affiliate of
the Red Cross). In 2003, OCA gave the sum of N136,000, milk, yam, rice and other food items. The presentation was
broadcast in the Daily Champion newspaper of Thursday, February 6th, 2003, a national newspaper circulated in Nigeria.
This meager assistance was double the prior two years assistance to the organization by OCA. It might sound
inconsequential to us here in the USA but to starving orphans, this meant life and hope for the morrow.
In the subsequent year, OCA
provided two high blood pressure
monitors to all health centers
within Owerri. Other charitable
activity by OCA include giving
cash scholarships to needy
students of Owerri communities in
Nigeria. And in 2011, cash based
scholarship award was also given
to three deserving graduating high
school students – 12th graders in
Northern California.
Owerri-Day 2015 will feature
among other activities, the Owerri
Women’s Traditional Dance,
Fashion Parade, Raffle Draws,
Owerri Children’s Dance, and a
Fundraiser and Scholarship Awards
Gala to academically gifted and/or
indigent young men and women
from the Northern California region who will be entering college at the beginning of the 2015/16 academic year.
